Obstetrician & Gynaecologist MBBS (Hons), FRANZCOG
I had always planned to work both in a private practice as well as a public hospital, and after I returned from England in 2007, Dr Leah Xu and I founded OGCG. Our aim was to provide a holistic and women-centered clinic for women’s health. Since then, we have grown from a group of like-minded O&Gs to a clinic encompassing 5 full-time obstetricians as well as dedicated gynaecologists, pelvic floor physiotherapists, a lactation consultant, a maternal and paediatric dietician, a perinatal counsellor and a Chinese medicine practitioner. They are supported by four midwives, five secretaries and a practice manager (the real boss of the clinic!).
I also work at the Royal Women’s Hospital in the gynaecology department. I believe in equitable access to timely and appropriate healthcare and enjoy the professional stimulation of being surrounded by specialists at the very beginning of their training all the way to those nearing the end of their careers.
I am experienced in caring for patients at every stage of their healthcare journey, and enjoy looking after all women. I am comfortable caring for women in same-sex relationships, women intending to solo-parent and women of different cultures and beliefs, and have developed an understanding of some of the specific challenges that may arise. I have an enormous respect for the strength and vulnerability that I see in those under my care, whether it be during intensely emotional times such as labour but also during the living of their day-to-day lives coping with periods, routine cervical smears or menopause. I give my parents the time and space to ask questions, explore options and discuss concerns with the aim of guiding them toward making decisions that work best for themselves and their families.
One of the joys of pregnancy care for me is getting to know my patients and their families. Private obstetric care allows for continuity and consistency of care and our group practice model allows for seamless and transparent management of patients during their pregnancy and birth. Being familiar with my patients and their specific needs and values allows me to individualise their care.
I was born in Malaysia and moved to Australia when I was 8 years old. When I’m not working, I enjoy cooking, eating and talking about food and am always keen to hear restaurant recommendations. I love to travel and learn about different cultures as well as sampling different cuisines. I guess the stereotype about Malaysians being obsessed with food is true after all! I also love to knit, read and make jam and am glad to finally be old enough to act my age. I can’t wait to meet you and your family during such an exciting time in your life!
