Shared Maternity Care

Blog Image

At OGCG, we offer Shared Maternity Care, a collaborative model that is a flexible and supportive option for those planning to give birth at one of Melbourne’s major public hospitals. This model allows you to receive most of your antenatal care with a trusted private obstetrician, but give birth through the public system. This approach is ideal for patients with low-risk pregnancies who are looking for continuity of care, and a personalised experience throughout their pregnancy journey.

How it works?

Shared care means your pregnancy is managed jointly by your private obstetrician and a participating public hospital. You’ll see your obstetrician for most of your antenatal appointments, while also attending key check-ups and tests at the hospital where you plan to give birth. Your obstetrician will coordinate your care and work closely with the hospital’s maternity team to ensure a seamless experience.

Benefits of Shared Maternity Care

  • Continuity and personal connection with a dedicated private obstetrician
  • Lower overall costs (if you are uninsured) compared to full private hospital care
  • A safe, evidence-based approach for low-risk pregnancies
  • Flexible appointment times with shorter wait times
  • See an obstetrician you’re familiar with, often close to home or work
  • Obstetrician care continues postnatally, though they won’t attend your delivery
  • Option to see someone who speaks your language and understands your cultural needs
  • Support for mental health and contraception during and after pregnancy

Our hospital partners

We are proudly affiliated with several major public hospitals across Melbourne that support shared care arrangements. These include:

  • The Royal Women’s Hospital
  • Mercy Hospital for Women
  • Monash Medical Centre
  • The Northern Hospital
  • Sunshine Hospital

Is Shared Care right for me?

Shared maternity care is best suited for those experiencing uncomplicated pregnancies. During your first consultation, we will assess your medical history and discuss your preferences to help determine the best care plan for you and your baby.

Our Obstetricians are able to complete a referral to the public hospital that you are zoned to after this initial consultation.
